Disneyland Paris information
Disneyland Paris Castle is called le Chateau de la Belle au Bois Dormant in French. It was designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and inaugurated on April 12, 1992. The height of Disneyland Paris Castle is 50.9 meters. It was inspired by the Neuschwanstein Castle in Southern Germany, commissioned by Ludwig II in 1868. A truly fairytale castle, boasting soaring spires, ornate turrets, regal royal-blue rooftops, stained glass windows and tapestries, it invokes both the mystery of fictional palaces, as well as elements from real French castles, such as Pierrefonds.
Neuschwanstein Castle is the best known of European 19th century castles inspired by the Middle Ages. It was built on the model of the Wartburg in Germany and Pierrefonds Castle near Compiègne in France. The castle was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as a homage to the musician Richard Wagner. The palace was intended to be a refuge for the reclusive king.
It was opened to the paying public immediately after his death in 1886. Since then more than 61 million people have visited the castle. The palace has appeared prominently in several movies such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Great Escape and serves as the inspiration for Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle.
