History of Opera Bastille

In 1981, President Francois Mitterrand decided to build an opera house to replace Opera Garnier.

Carlos Ott, an Uruguayan, designed the 2,723 seats opera house located in the now fashionable Bastille district. Opera Bastille was inaugurated on July 14th 1989 for the anniversary of Bastille day.

Opera Garnier was not closed and today, operas and ballets are performed in both opera houses.
