The Bastille Opera is a modern opera house in Paris with a beautiful interior. It was
designed to replace the Opera Garnier.
That did not happen. Operas and ballets are now given in both opera
houses.
François Mitterrand, the French
president, decided to build a modern and popular place to perform
operas and ballets.
Carlos Ott, an Uruguayan, built the 2,723 seats
opera house, located at Place de la Bastille in Paris.
It was inaugurated in 1989 (right,
the Bastille Opera and the column of July, built in rembrance of Paris
1830 revolution).
